Will a new daughter have an influence on Davido’s music?

Fatherhood has and will never affect Davido’s style of music. The man is a pop artist who is tasked with making hit music for the popular market.

Just in case you didn’t know, Davido is about to become a father for the second time.

The DMW boss is expecting his second daughter from a lady named Amanda. This he confirmed in an interview with Beat 99.9 FM, in Lagos.

And as I write this article, Amanda is currently in labour in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where she is expected to give birth safely to another member of the next generation of Adelekes. This would make it baby number two, with his first daughter, Imade, who came into the world in 2015. Her mother is Sophia Momodu, a niece of the great journalist and national commentator, Dele Momodu.

Davido already knows the demands of fatherhood. He cherishes his daughter Imade, and has already began to show love to the unborn one on social media. Turns out family is very important to him, and represents his core focus in life, apart from music, and Snapchat, and expensive wristwatches.

“All those people out there saying I have too many babies, do you know how many babies they have killed?” He said during an interview with Guardian. “At least I can confidently say I have never told any girl to have an abortion. I am not saying having a baby without marriage is good, but to me babies are blessings.”

Fatherhood has changed Davido as a person. But it hasn’t truly affected his music. His first daughter Imade came at a very crucial time in his career. He had just sealed his deal with Sony Music Entertainment, which turned out to be a horror show for him. His music got delayed, his EP sounded uninspired and was panned by critics.

But that wasn’t Imade’s fault. It was the fault of the major record label taking away his creative control. In 2017, he finally sealed a deal to take it back, and his first single ‘If’, became a mega hit.

The new baby comes at a point where Davido is having a career high, chasing down the best of shows in Africa, while also throwing his weight behind international collaborations with stars.

But fatherhood has and will never affect Davido’s style of music. The man is a pop artist who is tasked with making hit music for the popular market. This he does by simply embracing his privileged background, and singing about themes of love, wealth and his celebrity.

When he talks about love, he approaches it from all angles. Sometimes, he is the pure emotional noble being like he was on ‘Aye’. And sometimes he is the swashbuckling sexual beast, which you can find in ‘Coolest kid in Africa’. But sometimes, he merges both forms, and becomes both the beast and the lover (‘If’).

But Davido will not change his content for his daughters. He would remain the pop star that we know. And continue to create his art with his specific themes in mind. They are money makers, he is young and talented, and that combination still works. No new child will make him flip that.

The only change we will see is the degree of hustle. Men tend to be more focused when they become fathers, with little kids depending on them. For Davido, we know they don’t have to depend directly on him, but irrespective of family money, he is a man, with an ego. A natural provider. And he will want to earn for the kids.

Bring on baby number 2. This Davido is going nowhere!
